The largest urban area outside of the Reykjavik capital region, Akureyri and its surroundings are home to about 20,000 people, according to Statistics Iceland. The University of Akureyri is located here and, like many college towns, the city as a result has a youthful feel about it, with plenty of bars, cafes, and restaurants to choose from. Along with a larger population come more hotel choices than you’ll find in other towns outside of Reykjavik, so it makes for a good base for exploring the northern regions around Lake Myvatn, Husavik, and Godafoss.

About a 30-minute drive from Akureyri in the Öxnadalur valley, just off the Ring Road, Engimýri Lodge has 16 guest rooms, a restaurant and a patio looking out over the valley, and it stays open year-round.
Hotel Kea, part of the Keahotels chain, is one of the best-known full-service hotels in Akureyri, with 104 ensuite rooms, a restaurant and bar, a gym, and minibars and coffee machines in the rooms. The Hotel Kea is also one of the more expensive options in town.
