About WhyGo Iceland

WhyGo Iceland is part of BootsnAll, an independent travel site that has been helping people plan long, independent and multi-stop trips since the late 1990s. This guide covers the practical side of an Iceland trip: getting there, getting around, where to stay, what it costs and what to do once you arrive.

Katie Hammel started writing this guide in 2010, and a few research trips to Iceland got it going. She wrote about the country the way a practical traveler uses it: which bus to take, where to eat on a budget, and which pool to soak in after a long day. Since then the guide has been maintained and updated with help from travelers and the editors on the BootsnAll team. Prices, bus fares, airlines, visa rules and anything else that goes out of date are checked against official sources, which are linked in the text so you can confirm them yourself.

Iceland changes fast. Since this guide was first written the country has gained about 75,000 residents, just under 2.3 million foreign visitors stayed overnight in 2025, and the Reykjanes peninsula near the airport has erupted repeatedly.

About Your WhyGo Iceland Guide

mehorseKatie Hammel took her first trip to Iceland in March of 2009, lured by the promise of adorable, furry Icelandic horses and unforgettable landscapes. The horses, and the entire country, turned out to be everything that was rumored, and more. From the moment she saw the lights of Keflavik Airport appear out of the darkness of the North Atlantic, Katie has felt like she was meant to be an Icelander.

Her favorite spots in Reykjavik are in I Heart My City: Katie's Reykjavik.
